Prowler and thief sent to drug court

A serial thief admitted a string of theft and prowling offences.

Perry Hayward, 40, from Pembroke pleaded guilty to stealing items from a Lagoon Drive home in Paget on two occasions and prowling around the same property in August.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe remanded Hayward to the Drug Treatment Court programme after hearing a caregiver employed to help seniors at a Lagoon Drive home discovered on August 1 that a handbag with debit cards, keys, personal items and cash had disappeared.

The worker spoke to a neighbour who was able to provide CCTV footage of a man riding up to the house on a motorcycle, going into the home through an unlocked door and later leaving.

Another caregiver at the property discovered that a laptop bag containing personal items had been taken from the home on August 18 and called the police.

The court heard that later that same evening a caregiver heard a knock on the door and saw Hayward.

Hayward claimed he was looking for a Filipino man, but was told that no one of that description lived or worked at the house.

CCTV footage from that evening showed Hayward looking around the property before he left.

Hayward also admitted prowling around Tom Moore’s Tavern in Hamilton Parish and stealing ten bags from staff at the restaurant on October 30. Hayward was spotted on the property a few days later.
