Stovell feeling grand after P&M award
Dion Stovell is the latest recipient of an award incentive presented annually to Somerset Cricket Club’s most valuable player during Cup Match.
The Southampton Rangers and Bermuda all-rounder received the P&M Cup and the $1,000 monetary award offered by local electrical service and supply business P&M Ltd.
“I’d like to thank P&M Ltd for the awards,” said Stovell, who was also chosen as 2018 Cup Match MVP. “It’s a good incentive for players during Cup Match to win the award.”
Stovell claimed match figures of seven for 79 with his off spin to guide Somerset to an innings and 34-run triumph against St George’s in Somerset.
He took three for 21 in the St George’s first innings and four for 58 in the second innings.
Stovell was brought back into the attack for another spell late in the second day, with St George’s desperately trying to save the match, and mopped up the tail to complete Somerset’s biggest win since 1948.
First, he broke a 97-run, ninth-wicket partnership between centurymaker Onias Bascome and Zeko Burgess. Stovell then dismissed Burgess to seal the victory.
The award is the brainchild of Terry Corday, the P&M Ltd owner and chief executive.
“Terry is a long-time Somerset Cricket Club supporter, and came up with the idea some years ago to provide a Cup Match monetary award for Somerset’s MVP,” said Michael Corday, the P&M purchasing manager and Somerset cricket chairman.
“It serves as motivation for our players to set higher goals to try to compete for the award.
“Terry is always doing something to motivate our players.
“One year we put a P&M sign up on the large net that he sponsored to stop balls from going into the garden. He told the players that if anyone hits that sign, he’ll donate $500.
“Janeiro Tucker then proceeded to hit a six that landed pretty much right in the middle of the sign. Was a lot of fun donating that award after the match.”
